@Gloria – I hltesnoy didn't think the coffee taste came through in the final cupcakes, but I'm not super sensitive to it. I used instant coffee rather than brewed coffee as well, so maybe brewed coffee would have provided a stronger coffee flavor. I'd probably suggest playing it safe and going with your usual water/cocoa powder substitution – why take a chance… Good luck, let me know how they turn out!

they look llveoy! great idea to use sour cream instead of buttermilk. i usually use the powdered buttermilk for the same reason, but i don’t know how much of a difference it makes.

I love how steomhing can just bomb for a few of us, yet others have great success. Your cupcakes are clearly a great success. How many great recipes have been created just because someone didn’t want to go to the store? I substitute things all the time for that reason, but oddly right now I am heading off to the store.
